The Media Are Not Helping

Here's one theory I have: if the media never reported on the financial collapse and the ensuing recession, we would never have had one.

This is a point of view I hear regularly from people. And I must say that I agree pretty much completely.

Over the past few weeks, and even today, the TV news has been littered with doom and gloom stories about high inflation, low interest rates, stagnant wages, job cuts, government spending cuts etc. This is exactly the bad press that the spending public do not want to hear. Why do we all want to be made to feel even more depressed about things when we turn the TV on?

We're all in this together, the media should shoulder some of that moral responsibility and start to broadcast some more positive news. Negativity isn't going to get this country spending again. Good evidence of this was the recent royal wedding. I don't know about everyone else but leading up to that day business was booming. People were happy, positive and ready to spend their cash. After that, and when the media lost interest and focused back on the economy, it all dipped again.

Things like this really grind my gears. Businesses are doing their damned best to make the best of a bad situation. Negative media will only exacerbate the problems and make life even harder.

And before any of you lot go saying: "well you're not so positive yourself", well I think I'm allowed to be a bit downbeat about things sometimes on here, I'm not watched by tens of millions of people in this country every night. I don't think I'm not going to have a national impact on here!

Totally agree with you.
seems to be a national pass-time, having to listen or read people talking things down.
Gerald Ratner gave a good example of how it should be done, then Darling predicted the recession.!!!!
Gordon Brown had a different approach though, He would talk things up in Public, whilst behind the scenes concoct the plots & schemes which would ensure disaster. Now he wants to run the IMF, he should be sectioned instead.
I now avoid newspapers & most of the "news", (apart from the odd blog). I spend the time saved just getting on with things.
lets try some examples of talking things up.
1.The Pvc window/door industry has undergone some immense changes during a general downturn in demand.
changes in building regs & the introduction of WERs, has resulted in innovation & product improvement.
most products on the market now Exceed the current minimum B/regs requirement, and will likely be able to fulfill the requirements of the next phase B/regs improvements in 2013.
other improvements are in development which will go further.
2. Fensa have asked all their members to take part in a survey to get industry opinion on strategy for consultation BEFORE the next change to building regs 2013.
?any more Positive comments?

So if the media did not report the truth, but instead withheld information to make people 'feel better', would that be good reporting?

The media are not sensationalising the economic problems - they're reporting the fact. Yes, ok, you do have certain tabloid newspapers that prefer to deal in headlines that shock. But the broadsheets and 'quality' newspapers/media outlets report objectively.

Essentially, it's freedom of speech. Because industries are struggling, that doesn't mean the media should clamp down on negativity (They themselves are an industry that needs to sell after all!)

If the PM loses some support because of a newspaper article, he would deem this negative publicity. Media will not stop reporting because of this.
You have to deal with the problems as does everyone else.

This isn't a communist state where the media is a government tool.
