Industry Twitter Behaviour

Social media is now getting very much embedded in our industry now. Some companies and individuals know how to handle it and use it to their advantage, some simply don't. Either way, we all have a behavior when using Twitter.

Mike Bygrave at Roseview Windows has created a poll: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PCDZGG2

The poll ask 8 simple questions about your habits on Twitter and takes no longer than a minute to answer. I'm not going to give examples of these questions on here as it would defeat the object of me wanting you all to click on the link above and take the poll.

Once enough data has been Mike has said he will publish it - and I'm pretty sure I'll analyze the results myself to see how the industry is making the most of Twitter.

Personally, I still don't think the industry is making the most of Twitter or using it in the correct way. First of all, Twitter is mainly a B2B marketing tool. The general populous still aren't using the micro-blogging site to search for window companies, Google has that all sewn up. I believe that most businesses update their Twitter feeds with offers so that their Twitter widgets look updated on their websites. I might be wrong, but that's what I would use it for.

Twitter is better for business to business use. Suppliers contacting installers and vice versa has created an excellent online relationship that wouldn't have been there before. It's quick, simple and gets things done.

Anyway, take the poll, it doesn't take long, and all feedback on this is welcome!

Thanks for linking to the survey, and thanks to everyone who fills it out.

I'm planning to let it run for around ten days or so, and then close it off and publish the results. Keep your eye on my Twitter account (@RoseviewWindows).

In the meantime, the more people who complete the survey the more representative the results will be. So, if you fancy pushing the link out to your own followers, I'd be very appreciative :) The link is...

Thanks!

Twitter is a very powerful social networking platform, and it is something we at FENSA use for a number of reasons. We would agree that many within the industry do not use it, or fail to use it correctly, and we believe the results of the survey you have linked in this post will illustrate that. Social Media is becoming increasingly popular to all forms of businesses, no matter what market they are in.

We would like to point out that, though you and many others may use Twitter as primarily a B2B tool, it is still used heavily by the general public, but in a very different way to how a business will use it. Twitter is great for B2B discussions but it is just as effective for engaging with consumers. We at FENSA recognise this, and are aware that the population won't necessarily follow a window installer, or a body such as ours. However, they do use Twitter to find information as and when they want it, and that information is highly valued. This is because it's engaging content, and a consumer can quickly find discussions relating to their area of interest - read what's discussed, read multiple views on that topic and even look and find organisations that can help. On Twitter, the consumer is looking for people they feel are experts - and consumers trust "people" more than they do company websites.

An example is that we use/setup the # tags #doubleglazing and #tripleglazing. We have answered many consumer focused questions within these tags, and yet many of these consumers have not chosen to follow us. This illustrates how consumers use Twitter, searching and engaging with people, finding relevant sources of information, but only as and when they need to. But remember that consumers only engage with people and companies that provide engaging tweets, simple marketing spiel and links is not enough.
