Double Glazing Industry Is Still Shakey In Places

My last post touched on a couple of developments within the double glazing industry.

The first bit of news was the confirmation of... (the rest of this section has been removed for my safety reasons!).

My second bit of news was about Safestyle. Some may already know this but their fitters are now on 3 day weeks and have taken a 20% pay cut. For a fitter who has to pay for a lad, and provide for his family, how is he going to manage on those sorts of work levels. It does beg the question of how well they are actually doing. Whenever you hear them talk they are always doing well, but in reality they can't be if they can't provide their fitters with a full weeks work. They did also shut down the Bradford plant not so long ago. How is this company still trading. I know from older salesmen in the industry that everyone has wondered how they have managed to carry on trading this long.

One thing that I've been wondering about is this; do we really want the biggest in the industry to go? When the bigger companies start advertising, that tends to generate leads for everyone in the industry. They are the ones to start the ball rolling in the New Year and get everyone back into the swing of things.

This tells me that our industry is still shakey in places, and that there are more companies that are due to go bust sooner rather than later. But I think for those who had a good last three months of 2009 and good beginning of this year then things should be looking up from here on in.

My last bit of news was about a company/branch going under in Castleford, but I am yet to hear any solid information about that so I don't have anything new on that front. But when I do it'll be on here.

Safestyle started trading the same year as our company. In the early days I used to speculate on how long Safestyle would last, but they continued to grow fast.

Whatever you think about how they do business, the fact is they've been highly profitable for many years. I don't know their current position, but I would suspect that the business is cash rich, and better positioned than most to ride out the post Christmas blues and bad weather.

When you have so many fitting teams, it's only natural to cut the hours of the fitters, and suggests that rather than get rid of teams, they're keeping them for the busy period.

TWS - interesting. I don't think companies should cut back on advertising during a recession. The problem for them could have been where they were spending the budget.

Hello DGB,
Do you use UPVC maintenance for replacement parts. They are pretty good, if expensive. Will be useful for the TWS customers.

Anonymous - yeah we do actually, they are quite useful, always have what we need, good on price too.

RCG - we've always thought it's been cash rich, it's just where that cash has come from! I think the fitting situation has been like that for a while, I don't think it was implemented to just ride out the quiet period. I know a lot of fitters have been leaving to find greener pastures.

Anon - when did TWS come out to see you? In my opinion double glazing firms which crash their prices lose their credibility straight away, shows their complete dishonesty. Imagine if you had been taken in at their first offer. Where in Wakefield are you?

Interesting stuff! In fairness, any company could find any small detail and say that defines them as part of such a small number companies with that detail, means very little depending how relevant/important that detail might be. Yeah probably best not to ask! The coming down on price so much gives the biggest indication. Have you had the windows in question fitted?

windows getting fitted next week over two days i think, ps tv areal goes through the frame of my old window will they se to that, think its best not to drill hole in new glazing frame , have to be the wall ??

Yes they should see to that. They won't go through the brickwork unless you ask them to, usually they will put it between the frame and the brickwork and hide it away. If you have other preferences then it's best you let them know. Which builder did you go to for the windows?

I'm not sure where you are getting all your info from regarding the alledged demise of my company tws leeds ltd. Suffice to say your recent posts are wildly inaccurate.TWS leeds is and has been continuously trading since may 1999. Tony Grindley. MD.
