Is External Georgian Bar Expensive For What It Is?

Most items when pricing windows and doors justify their price in my opinion. But one thing that I have always thought was a bit expensive is external Georgian bar. I've had costs ranging from £60 per m2 to £142 per m2, differing from company to company. I understand that the anti-rattle technology is a bit fickle, and that fitters have problems de-glazing them if the bars have been fitted in the factory. But that surely can't justify such a huge increase in cost.

This is made to look worse when you compare it to the internal Georgian bars. These are considerably cheaper, easier to maintain, no de-glazing issues, but the consumer is still able to maintain the Georgian look, without paying through the nose for it. This is the reason why we sell very little of the external bars, and lots of the internal bars. One would have thought that with time, as with all new products and technologies, the price of external Georgian bars would have come down.

External Georgian Bar has been expensive in the past, and some of the costings that I have seen have been scary. I have also had many fabricators voice their concerns and problems to me with it. This is what has led to Window Widgets developing their own.

We can offer georgian bar on most systems in bar length or in kit format. Our kits are set up to fit Bar onto both sides of a 1200 x 600 window. Each kit is supplied with lengths end milled to your systems design, leaving either the fabricator or installer to square cut to size at the unique cruciform. log onto our website for more info.

As a sash window fabricator, astragal bars (or external georgian bars) are pretty much standard. As we also manufacture our own glass, we know exactly what the difference in cost and effort is.

The two biggest cost factors in astragal bar are the back-to-back spacers within the unit, which themselves take much longer to do than simple internal georgian, and then the milled and mitred bar ends and clips + tape on the astragal.

Trust me, it takes a LOT longer to do proper 6-grid astragal than the equivalent internal georgian bar. And the result is much more authentic.

Having said all that, the prices you mentioned (£60-£140 m2) seem way over the top. On a Rehau vertical slider we charge something between £35 and £40 m2 for full astragal grids. Maybe that's because - as a sash window fabricator - we do astragal all the time and are well set up for it. I guess it's much rarer for casement fabs.

Lee - an opportunity to advertise well taken!

Mike - that seems a more reasonable price. But if all manufacturers made it cheaper, would the industry sell more to make up for it?

I doubt whether casement manufacturers who rarely deal with astragal bars could ever be compete with sash window manufacturers who do it all the time.

Perhaps we should start selling astragal services to casement fabricators ;)

I have had french doors UVPC with internal georgian bars, think the doors are 1800. When we close either one the whole georgian bar setup quivers badly. I thought the nibs were supposed to touch the glass and prevent that. This is the new wider gap Double glazing. Anyone know if this is right, seems odd and off putting to me

Thanks

NG - The quivering should definately not be happening. Sounds like either the Georgian bars haven't been fixed in properly, or it just hasn't been made right in the first place. Get your installers back out and report it to them, something ain't right there.

Astragals. Working on a loading bay in a window factory, astragals make me shudder, as i know if i need a contract of astragali's i will be waiting a while, they seem labour intensive. Personally i think they look better than your standard georgians, giving the window more depth. They seem to becoming more popular (particularly to our scottish customers). Id be interested in knowing how other manufacturers prep and fit their astragals.
