More Evidence Of Under-Selling

A new follower on my Twitter account: @AlexanderUpvc has been advertising this offer:

Fantastic UPVC Doors With Our Unique Lifetime Warranty – Only £395

This Alexander Windows Special Offer is for a 6 point locking, fully reinforced white uPVC front or back door and frame with your choice of clear or obscure glass. Choose from a selection of over 10 uPVC door styles, including both half and fully-glazed doors. It comes with a standard threshold and white furniture (handles, knocker and letterplate if required). This unbeatable price includes VAT, fitting and our Unique Lifetime Warranty.

What I'm doing on this post is politely asking how the hell do you make any money out of a £395 door including VAT and fitting?! What's even more baffling is the lifetime guarantee that is given with this price!

When prices are shooting up quicker than ever, this sort of pricing is utter suicide!

Another new follower on my Twitter page was advertising this offer on their Twitter account @HuddsGlazing:

7 windows including a bay window, fitted for £2100 inc VAT. Now that's a good deal.

I'm sorry but that is not a good deal from your point of you @HuddsGlazing. It's way too cheap. How are you making any money out of that?

I tear my hair out when I see things like this about. I don't understand how companies still think that churning out these sorts of prices are going to be good for business. Overheads are up, raw materials are up and margins are down. This is exactly the last thing that should be happening.

Rant over.

No. £1000 for a door is the right price for a high quality door right now in this industry. If you pay in the region of about £500 you're not going to get a high quality door from a high quality company.

Leaving out the big national companies, the more you pay in this industry from more local companies the better quality you get. Buying cheap usually costs you more in the long run.

They are a big Kommerling Fabricator. You`d think they`d know better than offer £395 for a door. I`m a OMB and my cheapest doors around £500. That`s with low overheads

When you look into it, they are just plain glass panel doors. Can't expect anything different really for the lowest price gets it brigade. Personally I wouldn't have one fitted on my shed!

Not every example of cheap prices is proof of desperate companies with their backs against the wall - it may just be a loss-leader or a sale.

Tesco does it all the time, as do companies in virtually every industry (even Harrods have a sale!), so it's unfair to automatically assume that a DG company advertising a cheap price is ruining the market.

Having said that, it's equally possible that these offers are proof of a desperate company buying work. The only way to know is see how long they keep these offers running - if they run them until they go bust, you'll know the answer!

Retail vs Wholesale
I know absolutely nothing about windows, however I do know a hell of a lot about IT. Have you ever looked at the price of a PC in PCworld compared to companies like ccl or scan? Have you ever looked at the real wholeslae cost from the suppliers? No? Retailers often put a markup on goods that would make you disgusted at the ripoff. These small soletraders will have next to no overheads unlike those stupidly big companies that offer to come around to your house to do a quote? A quote? They're windows for goodness sake they have three purposes. 1. To let light through. 2. To keep heat in. 3.To keep theives out. It doesn't take a degree in thermal engineering to know that all you need to do is look at the thermal R value. It's all about hype and scare tactics to get you to pay more. Someone tell me how much a reasonable quality glazed unit costs at wholesale price, and I mean direct from the manufacturer.
