Who's Being Honest And Who's Not?

Time's for the window industry have got very tough over recent months, for everybody. In fact, time's have got tough for every sector and every industry over the last couple of months, no one can deny that. But it still baffles me that in a industry in the doldrums, how some can still be coming out saying they are busier than they have ever been.

Now I can understand that a company's natural instinct when asked if they are busy is to beef their answer up a little. But it's when businesses are saying they are booming, when it's quite clear that market conditions and other major companies say they are not. Yes some businesses may be busier than others, and well done to those for managing a steady flow of business in what are very tough trading conditions, but to come out with grand statements show a lack of credibility.

Now I'll be honest for a second. We are not breaking any records. Yes it's gone quiet over the last month or so, but we are doing better than last year. Simple as that.

And another thing that's bugged me. When people say they've had a record month, that could mean anything! What if a company only sold 50 windows last month, and sold 51 this month. Technically, yes that is a record, but on the other hand, the windows sold every month might not be enough to keep a business afloat. So when statements like that are made, I do take them with a huge handful of salt.

You're more than welcome to nip down to our factory and I'll show you all the windows we're making if you want?

I can also show you what we were making in previous months / years.

I know full well that you won't (even though we're just a few miles from each other) but the offer's there.

Look, for one second look at the industry wide scenario with an objectional eye. Can you see how I'm coming to these conclusions? 99% of all businesses I talk say exactly the same thing. What I've tried to do is to include business as a whole in this last post, not just the window industry. These 99% of people I've talked to have all said the same, 'it's pretty quiet out there'.

Now take your WYW head off for just a moment and understand how this looks. When everyone around you is saying one thing, and there is only say one of the rest saying the opposite, you surely have to raise an eyebrow. Can you see?

What I've not done is said that companies are just plain lying, that would be stupid as I can't prove that. But what I'm doing is putting my objectional eye on whats going on out there.

You need to stop seeing these posts as an attack on you or your company because they aren't, they're just my opinions.

And no I won't be coming down to see you at your offices, I know that your probably doing well, so I don't need to waste my time being shown numbers which will prove what is already assumed.

It's those companies that are dead but saying that they are busy that are going to look the most daft when things come to a head.

Keep your hair on.

Your post was referring to a comment I made on GlassTalk suggesting we were close to a record month.

You stated above:
And another thing that's bugged me. When people say they've had a record month, that could mean anything!

There is a difference when you talk about how an industry is doing, and how individual companies are doing.

I brought up the topic and agree that the industry is having a hard time. But it doesn't mean our business (by the way, I don't work for WYW) is feeling it.

So, I'm not being dishonest in any way as your post suggests.

Your not the only one to come out with the statement of having a record month, so I wasn't referring to you, though I did see your post on the GlassTalk site.

Sorry, I mean't C.O., forgot you split the businesses up.

The post never talked about individual companies, nor mentioned anyone specifically, you just assumed that because the post on GlassTalk was about the same thing, it must have been about that.

But let's not fall out about it eh!

We're a trade supplier of uPVC sash windows, so our results are largely dependent on how retail and commercial installers are doing, and how many of those installers we're selling to.

I can honestly tell you that we really are breaking sales and manufacturing records each month, and have been doing so since February. January was utter crap, but often is for trade suppliers, because it takes you lot so long to clear your New Year headaches and start selling windows ;)

To add a little meat to my claims, we're now regularly selling and making around 250% more windows than we were in 2009, for several reasons:

* in most cases the retail guys we supply are doing pretty well. uPVC sash windows are a relatively high-end product, which means that we don't deal with the real bottom-of-the-market boys who have been struggling.

* commercial installations of sash windows are up (particularly on new-builds) so our commercial installer customers are buying more windows

* last year we spent a lot of time and effort streamlining our operation, improving our production efficiency and targeting new customers. We now sell more windows to more people than we did before

* we've upgraded and added to our factory equipment, allowing us to make (and therefore sell) more windows

* two of our competitors got themselves into major difficulty around the turn of the year, so naturally we've benefited from that.

I can't comment on the market for casement windows, because I don't know how that's going. However, our niche of uPVC sash windows is growing month-on-month. Long may it continue ;)

Mike - sounds good to me, and you've provided evidence too lol. Hope you can keep it going. Could you e-mail me a price list or sorts to me, might be interested, we don't push sash windows perhaps as much as we should.

I think the message your getting if you're a succesful trade supplier with an eye on costs you will do well no matter what. Retail companies have to chase the true market, and trade fabricators have to chase us lot, but if in the case of CO and Mikes company they have enough companies doing decent numbers they will always do well.

However saying that I'm bust down here in Wales too. However I do know I am bucking the trend for my region as my glass supplier tells me.

We're not falling out DGB. Nothing to fall out about. Could give you a list of reasons like Mike as to why we're doing well.

But I don't want to give you any insider secrets.
